Wauseon Fire April 2007

From the Division of State Fire Marshal Aug 18, 2009:

MAN INDICTED FOR SETTING WAUSEON FIRE

An investigation by the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal (SFM) Fire and Explosion Investigations Bureau, in cooperation with the Wauseon Police and Fire Departments and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, has led to the indictment of a Wauseon man in connection with two fires that occurred in Wauseon in 2007.

Charles L. Bryan, Jr. of Wauseon was indicted yesterday by a Fulton County grand jury on 14 felony counts relating to two separate fires. He was charged with one count of arson and one count of insurance fraud for a fire that occurred on January 9, 2007. He was also charged with eight counts of arson, three counts of aggravated arson, and one count of insurance fraud for a fire that occurred on April 14, 2007.

Mr. Bryan was arrested by the Wauseon Police Department and is currently being held in the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio awaiting arraignment. SFM Investigators confirmed that both fires were intentionally set and originated inside Doc Holliday’s, a restaurant located on North Fulton Street in Wauseon. The fire of January 9, 2007 was contained to the building where Doc Holliday’s was located. The second fire at that same location occurred on April 14, 2007, and spread to nearby buildings in downtown Wauseon, several of which were destroyed

From the Toledo Blade Aug 18, 2009:

Business owner indicted for starting fire that destroyed a Wauseon block

The man who promised to rebuild a business block in downtown Wauseon after a devastating 2007 fire has been indicted by a Fulton County grand jury for setting the fire in the first place.

Charles Bryan, Jr., was indicted Tuesday on 14 counts of arson and insurance fraud, with most of the charges related to the April 14, 2007 fire that destroyed seven businesses.

Mr. Bryan and his wife formed the Wauseon Downtown Development in August, 2007 to build a restaurant and retail space at Front and Elm streets. The project received a state grant covering $500,000 of the total $700,000 cost.

A report in May, 2007 said the fire was caused by arson and an investigation was ongoing. The fire originated in the restaurant, Doc Holliday's, which was owned by Mr. Bryan.
